Mother of believers
Zaynab bent Khuzaymah [AAH]

Her name and surname [AAH]:

She is Zaynab bent Khuzaymah ibn al-Harith ibn Abdullah ibn Amro ibn Abd-Manaf ibn Helal, al-Helaliya, the mother of believers, the wife of the Prophet [PPBUH]. Her mother is Hend bent Aof ibn Zuhair, who is the best old woman on earth in her in-laws. Her in-laws are: the messenger of Allah [PPBUH], Abo-Bakr as-Seddiq, Hamza and al-Abbas the sons of Abdel-Muttalib, and Gafar and Ali the sons of Abo-Talib [AAT].

Her sister from her mother is Maymunah bent al-Harith al-Helaliya, the mother of believers. Sayyda Zaynab used to be called the mother of the poor –before Islam- as she used to feed the poor and be merciful to them much. It was said that she was the wife of Abdullah ibn Gahsh, and he was martyred in Uhud, it was also said something else.

Her growing up [AAH]:

She grew up [AAH] in Mecca, in a society that was filled with corruption and degradation, circulate in the sedition of the polytheism, and eagerly engaged in the worship and glorification of the idols. Zaynab opened her eyes on this bad corrupted society and survived being buried alive, because she was from a deep-rooted home in sovereignty and wealth. She grew up in the holding of her parents enjoying their kindness and love.

She live through the main events of Mecca, which pivoted on sayyduna Mohammad ibn Abdullah [PPBUH], including the rebuilding of the Ka'ba, when the tribes of Quraish disagreed on who carries the "Black Stone" back to its place of the Ka'ba corner. She heard about the wisdom of the Honest Mohammad [PPBUH] and how he resolved this problem and prevented the blood spilling, by putting the Black Stone on his cloth and letting each of the tribe leaders carry one end of the cloth, as if they helped raising the Black Stone and they got this Great honor.

When the dawn of Islam appeared on Mecca, its light rays covered its places, sayyduna Mohammad ibn Abdullah called on the people to embrace to the unification, abandoning the worship of the idols, and abstain from the corruption and social defects, removing the differences between the people, as everyone is equal in humanity, and the best of people are the most pious not the wealthiest or the most powerful.

Then the heart of Zaynab clang to this new call, after she used to admire only the personality of the Prophet, his open and wise mind, his correct opinion, high level wisdom, and truthful honesty.

Her marriage to the Messenger [PPBUH]:

Zaynab bent Khuzaymah is one of the great wives of the Prophet [PPBUH]. It was not long after Hafsa entered the Mohammadian House, when the widow of the great Qurashian martyer, one of the first imegrants, entered this house. She was the fourth mother of believers. It seems that her short stay in the house of the Prophet [PPBUH], made the biography and historian people forgot about her. That is why, only few narrations of her news reached us, which were not all in agreement.

He [PPBUH] wedded her after he wedded sayyda Hafsa bent Omar, but she did not stay with him more than two or three months, some say eight months.

Ibn al-Kalby said: she was with at-Tufayl ibn al-Harith, but he divorced her. So his brother Obaida married her, but he died in Badr. So the Messenger of Allah [PPBUH] asked her for her hand in marriage. She left her matters to him. So he married her in Ramadan of the year 3 H. she stayed with him for eight months. It was said that the Prophet [PPBUH] married her to council her for the loss of her husband and to reward her for being righteous and pious.

Historians disagreed about who was her husband before the Prophet [PPBUH]. it was said that she was the wife of Abdullah ibn Gahsh, who was martyred in Uhud, then the Messenger of Allah [PPBUH] married her. Others said other things. At-Tabary said: in the fourth year the Messenger of Allah [PPBUH] married Zaynab bent Khuzaymah from bani-Helal in Ramadan.

They also disagreed about who married her to the Messenger of Allah [PPBUH]. ibn al-Kalby said that the Messenger of Allah [PPBUH] married her to himself, after she left her matters to him. ibn Hesham said in as-Syrah: her uncle, Qubaysa ibn Amro al-Helaly, married her to him. and the Prophet [PPBUH] gave her dowry of 400 Dirham.

They also disagreed about the period she spent in the house of the Prophet [PPBUH]. in "al-Esabah" there is a narration that says: she stayed with him 2-3 months then she passed away.

In another narration from ibn al-Kalby said: He [PPBUH] married her in Ramadan, 3 H, and she stayed with him 8 months then she passed away in Rabie al-Ukhra, 4 H.

In "Shazarat az-Zahab [the Sparkles of Gold]": in the third year, He [PPBUH] wedded Zaynab bent khuzaymah al-Ameriya, mother of the poor, and she lived with him for 3 months then she passed away. She did not narrate anything from the Prophet [PPBUH].

Mother of the poor [AAH]:

All historians agreed that she was so generous and kind to the poor. Her name almost is never mentioned without her honorable surname: mother of the poor. In the book of "al-Estiab" and the book of "al-Esabah": she was called mother of the poor because she used to feed them and give them alms. In "the history of al-Tabary" and "as-Syrah" of ibn Hesham: she was called mother of the poor for her mercy on them and her kindness towards them. Az-Zahry said "the Prophet [PPBUH] married Zaynab bent Khuzaymah, who is the mother of the poor. She was called that name because her many feedings to the poor. She was from bani Amer ibn Sa'sa'ah".

Zaynab [AAH] was inclined to love and be kind to the poor and the weak, because of many factors, one of them was when she saw the servant who was tortured because he did not get the permission of his master to eat after he got very hungry and his body weakened. This incident had a great effect on her kind heart and her human inclination. It was narrated that used to save from her provisions to give the poor and needy, until she became famous for all people and throughout Mecca.

Her passing away [AAH]:

The most probable is that she died on her thirty, as al-Waqedy mentioned and ibn Hajar transferred in "al-Esabah". She laid down in peace as she lived in peace. The Prophet [PPBUH] prayed for her the funeral prayers, and buried her in al-Baqie in Rabie al-Aakher -it was also said in Ramadan- of the year 4 H. She was the first of the mothers of believers [AAT] to be buried there. She died 8 months after her marriage. While none of the mothers of believers died in his life except sayyda Khadija, the first mother of believers, who was buried in al-Hugun in Mecca, and sayyda Zaynab bent Khuzaymah al-Helaliya, the mother of believers and mother of the poor.

A special honor:

In spite of the short time that syyada Zaynab bent Khuzaymah [AAH] stayed in the house of the Messenger [PPBUH], but Allah honored her with a special honor that no other wife of his [PPBUH] had, as he [PPBUH] prayed for her the funeral prayers by himself, as this prayer was not revealed yet at the time of sayyda Khadija [AAH]. And they were the only two women who died in the Messenger of Allah's life.

May Allah reward her with all the goodness, accept her, and please her.
